Study of sonochemical coating on contact lenses with antibacterial metal/enzyme nanoparticles
Single step sono-enzymatic process will be used for coating of medical devices e. g. contact lenses with hybrid metal/enzyme nanoparticles to produce biocompatible material with durable antibacterial properties.
Objectius
The student will acquire knowledge of how to prepare and characterize the obtained nanoparticle coatings using different techniques available in our lab. He/she will learn to work in a research group, think critically and solve problems in order to complete the scientific mission during the visiting period. Each student will be guided by an expert in the field of chemistry, microbiology, and nano(bio)technology to optimize the research process and maximize her/his learning experience. Furthermore, the applicant will have the opportunity to participate in national/international projects and scientific publications.

Literature research on the current antibacterial strategies used to control bacterial infection related to contact lenses wearing
Literature research on the current approaches for generation of antibacterial contact lenses.
Literature research on the use of sonochemistry for coating with antibacterial actives.
Experimental Research: Silicone contact lenses functionalization by high intensity ultrasounds.
Surface characterization of the coated materials by scanning electron microscopy and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.
In vitro antibacterial activity and biocompatibility tests using respectively medically relevant bacteria and human cell lines.
Evaluate coating stability and the active agents release in the contact lenses washing solutions.
Bachelor or Master Thesis writing: Data processing and discussion of the obtained results in a scientific manner.
