Study of innovative nanoformulations for bacterial eradication
Nanostructured lipid carriers and antibiotic nanospheres (NSs) will be prepared using high intensity ultrasound and high pressure homogenization. The NSs will be engineered on both composition and surface properties to be used against bacteria.
Objectius
The student will acquire knowledge of how to prepare and characterize the obtained functional NSs using different techniques available in our lab. He/she will learn to work in a research group, think critically and solve problems in order to complete the scientific mission during the visiting period. Each student will be guided by an expert in the field of chemistry, microbiology, and nano(bio)technology to optimize the research process and maximize her/his learning experience. Furthermore, the applicant will have the opportunity to participate in national/international projects and scientific publications.
Tasques a realitzar / Característiques
Literature research on the different strategies used to control bacterial growth and reduce the drug-resistant infections occurrence. Literature search on the currently available techniques for production of antibacterial and antibiofilm active antibiotic nanocarriers. Literature research on the techniques used to characterize the bulk properties and the added functionalities of the developed NSs. Experimental Research: Preparation of nanostructured antimicrobials by high intensity ultrasound or high pressure homogenization. Characterization of the NSs by dynamic light scattering, Z-potential evaluation, nanoparticle tracking analysis and Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films. Evaluation of the NSs antibacterial activity towards common pathogens and their toxicity on human cells. Bachelor or Master Thesis writing Data processing and discussion of the obtained results in a scientific manner.
