Nanoenabled hydrogel coatings to control contact lenses associated bacterial infections
Hydrogel containing antibacterial hybrid nanoparticles (NPs) will be generated and deposited on silicone surface via layer-by-layer and ultrasound process.
Objectius
The student will learn the normal work in a research laboratory from the idea development until the proof of concept is released and will be guided to develop his/her own critical thinking and problem solving. The student will learn the operational use of several techniques for NPs and hydrogel preparation, functionalization, characterization and coating on medical devices. The applicant will have the chance to be included in a scientific peer-reviewed publication according to his/her contribution.
Tasques a realitzar / Característiques
Literature research on the techniques used to characterize the bulk properties and the added functionalities of the developed NPs. Literature research on the composition of the coatings for long stability and sustained release of antimicrobial NPs. Experimental Research: Preparation and functionalization of antimicrobial NPs by means of high intensity ultrasound or layer by layer on template NPs and further inclusion into hydrogels coatings. Preparation of antimicrobial NPs using high intensity ultrasound or layer-by-layer self-assembly. NPs characterization by dynamic light scattering, nanoparticle tracking analysis, Z-potential evaluation and Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films. Development of NPs containing hydrogels on medical devices via layer-by-layer or ultrasound. In vitro assessment of the NPs antibacterial activity and their compatibility to human cells. Evaluation of the coating antibacterial efficiency against medically relevant bacteria. Stability tests under at use conditions will be also performed. Bachelor or Master Thesis writing Data processing and discussion of the obtained results in a scientific manner and their corresponding writing.
